Walk through almost any established Toronto neighbourhood — the Victorian and Edwardian semis downtown, the mid-century bungalows across Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke — and you’re looking at homes built long before modern insulation standards existed. Why This Summer Was a Wake-Up Call

Older Toronto homes often come with complications newer suburban builds don’t: narrow attic access, roof lines that weren’t designed with modern insulation in mind, and in some cases knob-and-tube wiring that has to be accounted for before certain insulation types can be used safely. This is a case where a proper in-person assessment matters — a generic quote can’t account for what a 1920s semi in the west end actually needs versus a 1960s bungalow in Scarborough.
What to Watch For
- Top-floor rooms that run noticeably hotter or colder than the rest of the home
- Rising energy bills that don’t match usage patterns
- Visible gaps, thinning, or discoloured insulation if you’ve been in the attic
- No record of insulation work since the home was built or last renovated
